Evan Kharasch MD, PhD
has been appointed as Professor and Chief of the Division of Clinical and
Translational Research (DoCTR) in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington
University School of Medicine, effective October, 2005. Evan received his
MD and PhD (Pharmacology) degrees from Northwestern University in 1983. Following
an anesthesiology residency and research fellowship at University of Washington
he remained on faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology at UW, where he
ascended to the rank of Professor and Vice-Chair for Research. He was also
assistant dean for clinical research at University of Washington School of
Medicine. Evan's research has been in the areas of drug metabolism, drug interactions
anesthetic toxicity and pharmacogenetics. He is widely known for his work
in anesthetic metabolism and has multiple NIH grants to support this work.
Evan is the recipient of numerous research awards and is an editor of the
journal Anesthesiology.
The Division
of Clinical and Translational Research (DoCTR) consists of 3,000 square feet
of office and lab space in the Northwest Tower. There are offices for 5 faculty
and one administrator and cubicle workspace for up to 13 research staff and
a separate workspace for 2 study monitors. The division's research laboratory
can be utilized for low risk, healthy volunteer research studies. In addition
to the Medoc PATHWAY Pain and Sensory Evaluation System, the lab is equipped
with four medical chairs, a TV with a built in DVD player, a centrifuge, specimen
freezer, IV poles, IV startup kits, and phlebotomy supplies.
In addition, the DoCTR has 219 square feet of space utilized
as a "workroom" on the 3rd floor of Barnes Hospital South. This
space is available to research faculty and staff working on OR-based research
projects. The space is equipped with several computers, a networked printer,
supply refrigerator and a specimen freezer.
The DoCTR employs 7 full-time research coordinators
and a full-time QA specialist whose responsibilities include assistance in
IRB and other regulatory document preparation, adverse event reporting, research
data coding, research subject safety, auditing, and monitoring. The Division
head, Dr. Evan Kharasch is a world-renowned clinical and translational scientist
in the field of pharmacogenetics and drug metabolism.
