The Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University Pain Management Center provides specialists outpatient evaluation and management of patients with severe pain problems, including neuropathic related pain, back pain, cancer pain and other pain problems.
Services include multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary evaluation and treatments. Nerve block procedures, some of which require fluoroscopy, are used when needed. The emphasis is on coordinated patient care.
Specialists involved in a multi-disciplinary assessment might include a pain management physician (anesthesiologist), psychologist, social worker, physical therapist and registered nurse. Referrals to other physician specialists are readily available as needed.
This service has recently become administratively independent from the Medical Procedures Unit. It is intended to offer an alternative setting to the surgery suite for pain management procedures that require outpatient facilities.
Cases range from simple to highly complex. Treatment ranges in duration from short term to several years. Roughly 50 to 60 percent of cases are for back pain but the balance is made up of a large number of highly variable pain problems.
The center has recently expanded to include four full-time staff anesthesiologists to cover both inpatient and outpatient needs. A full time physician is also available at our Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital facility located at 1040 North Mason Road, Suite 102, Creve Coeur, Missouri.
The program is supervised by Dr. Robert Swarm, Medical Director, who is ABMS Certified, Anesthesiology, Pain Management.
Wait time for an initial appointment is approximately two weeks after the patient's medical records have been received; more urgent appointments are available as needed.
Some insurance programs accepted. Please call for a current list.
Referrals are accepted through physicians only. The majority of patients serviced are within a geographic area encompassing southern Illinois and Missouri with specialty referrals from wider area.HOURS: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm -- 24 hour coverage available through call.
