Cardiothoracic Anesthesia Fellowship

We offer a dynamic and flexible fellowship program. Graduates of our program are able to provide perioperative care for patients with underlying medical problems who are undergoing complex surgical procedures. We pride ourselves in our didactic teaching program, our excellent clinical care, our skills in echocardiography and our wide ranging clinical research program.

Apart from routine cardiothoracic procedures, we have extensive local expertise in lung and heart transplantation, off pump cardiac surgery, adult congenital cardiac surgery, lung volume reduction surgery, esophageal surgery, aortic surgery, complex valvular surgery and cardiac assist device surgery. We operate in new, state of the art operating rooms. The faculty is comprised of highly experienced physicians with extensive international experience. Among our faculty are experts in coagulation, echocardiography, arrhythmias, fluid therapy, perioperative neurological damage, and cardiothoracic critical care. Our faculty are active in research and education, and are prominently represented at national and international meetings. Through our intensivist team, our division provides all the critical care coverage in a state of the art 21-bed cardiothoracic critical care facility.

We recognize that experience and ultimately accreditation in TEE is an integral component of cardiothoracic fellowships. We therefore offer structured bedside and didactic teaching as well as protected time to join the cardiologists in the echocardiography reading suite. We also sponsor attendance of a comprehensive TEE course. Our fellows are expected to take and pass the Perioperative TEE Examination.

We also offer the oppportunity to pursue a combined cardiothoracic/critical care fellowship. Washington University has one of the most respected critical care communities in the United States, with strengths in cardiothoracic, medical, surgical and neurological ICU. There is an internationally respected known critical care research program, both in the clinical and basic science arenas.

Washington University has a very active liver and solid organ transplant program. We have the ability to increase our fellows’ exposure to this area. Ultimately, we aim to encourage our fellows to be motivated physicians who are highly skilled and professional and who can offer impeccable care to the sickest patients. We encourage critical thought, healthy academic debate and cutting edge research.

We encourage potential applicants to contact us and to discuss their specific needs and career goals. We will work with applicants to accommodate their individual needs wherever possible.
