As you have chosen to pursue a career in anesthesiology, we invite you to consider the training experience in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. In choosing a residency program, it is essential to select a program that meets your educational and professional needs as it will serve as a foundation for future training and practice. Our program offers top-notch clinical experiences, multi-disciplinary education, and resident activities in a supportive environment.

Our integrated residency program provides challenging clinical experiences from internship through residency in every field of anesthesiology and advanced training in neuroanesthesia, cardiothoracic, chronic pain management, pediatrics, OB and critical care medicine. With these subspecialties represented, trainees are exposed to the complexities of challenging perioperative management in preparation for additional fellowship training or clinical practice. Since this general and subspecialty training is centered under the single roof of the Washington University Medical Center, our program and department gains cohesiveness and excellence as a leader in numerous subspecialties consistently ranked at the top of the nation.

In addition to the clinical environment, our program provides several other forms of education and research to complete the training experience. Beyond fundamental lectures and problem-based learning discussions for junior residents, you will receive regular board examination review. You also benefit by having access to a nationally recognized, high fidelity simulation program for both adult and pediatric patients that highlight common and rare clinical scenarios. Basic science, clinical research, and translational research opportunities also abound for interested residents.

The educational experience at Washington University is second to none. Our faculty are consistently recognized for their excellence in teaching and have been voted “best overall clinical teacher” by the students of the Washington University School of Medicine. Faculty also serve as national board examiners, editors of prominent sub-specialty journals and are widely published in the literature. Fellowships at Washington University are intentionally kept small in an effort to maximize resident education and case variety. We believe that no finer clinical curriculum exists across our nation.

The clinical experiences and education are complemented by our location in St. Louis, Missouri. While St. Louis boasts the amenities of a large city including several professional sports teams, a renowned symphony, and culinary diversity, it retains the comfort and ease of living found in a more modest setting. Residents find the central location of the hospital and the city convenient for travel within the area and out of town, yet the cost of living allows for home ownership and enjoyment of other activities. These activities include our monthly resident and faculty social events for maintaining and building morale and friendships found within our program.

If you are interested in training within an excellent residency program in a convenient setting, consider Washington University Department of Anesthesiology in St. Louis, Missouri. We welcome your application and look forward to meeting you. Please contact us directly with any questions.

Sincerely,
The Chief Residents
