St. Louis Children's Hospital
St. Louis Children's Hospital opened in 1879 in downtown St. Louis .This year, St. Louis Children's Hospital, the first children's hospital west of the Mississippi River and the seventh oldest in the country, is proud to celebrate its 125th anniversary. Founded in 1879 by a group of eight pioneering women, the hospital opened in a small, rented house with 15 beds. Today, St. Louis Children's Hospital's clinical and community outreach programs touch more than 250,000 patients annually.
- SLCH has 250 licensed beds, consisting of a 36-bed pediatric intensive care unit (including a 12-bed cardiac intensive care unit), a 67-bed newborn intensive care unit and a 6-bed pediatric bone marrow transplant unit.
- Each year about 275,000 patients visit SLCH, which offers comprehensive services in every pediatric medical and surgical specialty. SLCH has served patients from all 50 states and 56 countries.
- In 2007 Child magazine ranked St. Louis Children's Hospital #7 on its list of the 10 Best children's hospitals in the country. Child also ranked SLCH 2 nd in pulmonary medicine, 6 th in newborn medicine, and 8 th in orthopedic care. SLCH was the only hospital in Missouri and the surrounding eight-state region to achieve this elite ranking.
- In 2008, St. Louis Children's Hospital was recognized as one of the nation's top children's hospitals in all of the seven specialties rated by US News & World Report. St. Louis Children's Hospital ranked 6th in neurology and neurosurgery; 11th in neonatal care; 12th in respiratory disorders; 17th in general pediatrics, cancer care, heart and heart surgery; and 23rd in digestive disorders.
