Didactic Programs

An integral part of residency training is the educational programs provided outside of the operating room. The didactic programs and conferences are designed to supplement the clinical training provided in the operating rooms and critical care units. Our goal is to provide a solid foundation in the basic and clinical sciences relevant to anesthesia practice necessary to function as a consultant in anesthesiology.  A secondary goal is to prepare our residents for the board certification process of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

CA-1 INTRODUCTORY LECTURES

An eight-week introductory series of lectures, workshops, and simulation sessions covering the basics of anesthesiology offered to incoming residents during their tutorial period.

CA-1/CA-2 LECTURE SERIES

A comprehensive two-year series of lectures intended to provide a solid foundation in the basic and clinical sciences relevant to the practice of anesthesiology and critical care.  All of the subspecialty areas of practice will be covered during the two-year cycle.

CA-3 SEMINARS

Seminars designed to prepare residents to function as consultants in anesthesiology. The format of the clinical problem-based learning discussions follows that utilized at the ASA Annual Meeting PBLDs.  In addition, guest speakers give career seminars on topics such as: medico-legal aspects of anesthesiology, career planning, contracts, retirement plans and benefit packages, etc.  In addition, there are more focused sessions to aid in the preparation for the written and oral exams of the American Board of Anesthesiology.

CLINICAL CASE CONFERENCE

This is a case-oriented conference utilizing a interactive format centered around the presentation of an interesting case by a faculty member, fellow, or resident.  The presenter moderates a lively discussion of the clinical and professional issues relevant to the case management as well as discuss the pertinant literature.

GRAND ROUNDS

Nationally and locally recognized experts present a wide range of topics in the areas relevant to the anesthesiology, critical care, and pain management.  Residents are often given the opportunity to meet with visiting professors and participate in additional didactic sessions and seminars.

MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY CONFERENCE

This conference is held once a month in place of Grand Rounds. Cases in which there was significant morbidity, mortality, or the potential for morbidity and/or mortality are presented by the Chief residents or other members of the CA III residency class. The residents presenting the cases each month are never those personally involved in the care of the patient being discussed. Following presentation of the case, discussion is moderated by faculty with resident and faculty in attendance acting as discussants. Discussion concentrates on the clinical case management as well as addressing the system issues that may have contributed to the adverse event rather than the assignment of blame.

CLINICAL JOURNAL CLUB

Journal Club meets once a month.  Dinner is catered for these sessions and are designed to familiarize residents with current and/or controversial issues in anesthesiology. Another goal our Journal Club is to foster the development of the skills necessary to critically examine medical literature and practice evidence-based medicine.

RESEARCH SEMINARS

State-of-the-art presentations in the areas of basic and clinical research are given by guest speakers or members of the research divisions of the Department of Anesthesiology.

SUBSPECIALTY CONFERENCES

Each subspecialty area offers conferences as part of the didactic program.  Lectures and conferences are presented regularly for residents and fellows in pediatric anesthesiology, cardiothoracic anesthesiology, obstetric anesthesiology, pain management, and critical care medicine.

C.R. STEPHEN LECTURESHIP

The Annual C.R. Stephen Lectureship is named for the first Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University and recognizes distinguished leaders in the field of medicine.  Speakers are physicians-scientists chosen for their contributions in areas of interest to anesthesiologists.  This lecture attracts physicians, fellows, residents, and scientists from multiple disciplines in the medical community.
