The CA-1 year begins with an eight-week tutorial program in which the resident works one-on-one with a faculty supervisor. This close supervision is designed to help the resident foster the basic skills, knowledge, and judgement necessary to obtain confidence and progress to greater independence in their anesthesia practice. An important component of this tutorial period is the introductory lecture series which consists of lectures, workshops, and simulation sessions to give each resident a solid foundation in the basic science and clinical concepts of anesthesia practice.
Following the eight-week tutorial period, residents are assigned to various subspecialty areas for four-week rotations. These areas might include General Surgery, Pediatrics, Cardiothoracic Surgery or Critical Care, Orthopedics, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Genitourinary Surgery, Otolaryngology, Ophthamology, Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrics. In addition, our program offers a comprehensive exposure to anesthesia for ambulatory surgery in a free-standing ambulatory surgery center.
