RESIDENCY TRAINING IN THE PGY-1 YEAR

Our categorical residency training program is designed to prepare a resident for a career as a perioperative consultant and anesthesiologist. It follows the philosophy of the American Board of Anesthesiology with an emphasis on training in critical care medicine within the anesthesiology residency program. Our department has long been a leader in critical care medicine and education. While many of the clinical rotations are within the departments of internal medicine and general surgery, the PGY-1 year remains under the direction of our department’s residency training program and program director. We are committed to providing the finest PGY-1 training experience in the country.

The PGY-1 rotation schedule is as follows:

  • 4 months of Internal Medicine (1 month of cardiology)
  • 2 months of General Surgery
  • 2 months of Emergency Medicine
  • 5 months in the Department of Anesthesiology
    • 1 month in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CT-ICU)
    • 1 month in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
    • 1 month in the Operating Room *
    • 1 month of Preoperative Medicine (CPAP) *
    • 1 month in the Simulation Center *

  * No overnight call during these rotations
