In the past, learning the skills of life-saving procedures and developing the judgment needed in critical care settings could take place only during actual patient care. That method limited exposure to events that occur at random and infrequently. There also was unavoidable risk to patients. Now, the Clinical Simulation Center provides education in an environment that is completely safe for patients and fully instructive for students.
The Clinical Simulation Center is a joint project of five entities: BJC Health System, Washington University School of Medicine, and its departments of anesthesiology, pediatrics and surgery. The Clinical Simulation Center is under the direction of David J. Murray, M.D., professor of anesthesiology. Each of the five sponsors sees benefits in the simulator available in no other way.
The device was constructed and installed by Eagle Simulation, Inc., a leader in the world's flight simulation market. Because the same capacity for life and death decision making is required of pilots and operating room personnel, the technology makes the transition particularly well.
